With our column, Forewords, we let readers know the latest book news about some of the web team's most-anticipated upcoming releases across the genres — just as the projects are announced!
RETURNING FAVORITE SERIES
Mystery - Carol K. Carr’s intrepid brothel proprietress/undercover government agent returns for the series third India Black and the Dark Legion. This Victorian-set mystery is sure to please and although there’s no publication date yet, we can’t wait to dive into India’s newest fascinating adventure!
Series Romance – Pat White continues her Port Whisper series with Small Town Killer. In the story, a federal agent’s work and home lives collide when the serial killer he is tracking sets sights on the agent’s son and a witness who might melt the ice around this jaded man’s heart.
NEW SERIES ALERT
Romantic Suspense – Stephanie Tyler fans are sure to fall head over heels for her newest heroes and heroines — a band of block ops agents committed to making the world safe for civilians. The series kicks off with Unbreakable. Publication date TBA.
Contemporary Romance – Love strikes in Brooklyn, New York, in Robin Kaye's new series, Bad Boys of Redhook. The series first, After the Storm, follows the misadventures of a bad boy who is coming home to help out his foster father — and possibly re-connect with the woman he loved and left many years ago.
Mystery – Can't get enough of Glee? Then yo will probably want to check out the new series from Lora Lillibridge. Using the pen name Lora Lee, the author kicks off The Joyful Noise Mysteries with Bringing in the Thieves about a choir director who is also an amateur sleuth and the collection of student singers he works with. Publication is set for spring 2012.
EXCITING DEBUT AUTHORS
Science Fiction – In John Love’s Faith the most brilliant minds of the human Commonwealth prepare to do battle against a Kafkaesque alien ship that has returned to terrorize humans after a 300-year absence. However, those onboard the Commonwealth’s ship, although brilliant, are not all stable. If they win this battle, the human race still may not be safe from extinction. There’s no publication date yet but we already have the chills!
Mainstream – Victoria Roberts, a celebrated New Yorker cartoonist, debuts with an illustrated novel that follows the adventure of a wealthy Upper East Side family that goes bankrupt and decides to make a new life for themselves, in style, in Central Park. Publication date TBA.
NON FICTION PICKS
Pop Culture – Suburgatory by Linda Keenan turns a satirical spotlight on life in the suburbs, with all of its absurdity. The project has already inspired an ABC series that is set to air this fall with the same name.
Aspiring Authors – Meredith Maran has collected writing wisdom from some of the great authors of today, including Isabel Allende, David Baldacci, Michael Lewis and more. The proceeds of the book Why We Write: 20 Acclaimed Authors on What Gets Them Started and Keeps Them Going will help support youth literacy programs. The book will be available in Winter 2013.
Young Adult – Sherrilyn Kenyon's novels YA series, Chronicles of Nick, has just been optioned for film development with Kenyon as co-producer. Although there’s no word yet on when Kenyon fans can expect to see Nick and his friends in theaters, the author has also sold the rights to her novels’ development in “all aspects of entertainment media including films, television and websiodes”. So consider our fingers crossed for news about a Dark-Hunters movie or more!
PIQUING OUR CURIOSITY
Romantic Suspense – A woman is caught between the security of uppercrust London Society and her desire to collect bounties in the dark world of the Underground in Black Cherry by Karina Cooper. Publication date TBA.
Historical Romance – Erin Kelly, an RWA Golden Heart finalist, pens a historical tale of romance and accidental deception in More than a Stranger. The story features a heroine who falls in love with a mysterious gentleman only to learn that he is not a stranger at all but her brother’s best friend — and the man who broke her heart years ago. Although no publication date has been announced, we can’t wait to get our hands on this You’ve Got Mail-style story!
Paranormal Romance – What would you do if you were a demon-hunting nephilim about to be kicked out of Sanctuary? If you are the heroine of Jennifer Armentrout’s Unchained, the answer is clear — team up with your annoyingly sexy stalker, who just happens to be a fallen angel, and prove that you aren’t the traitor that everyone this you are! Readers will want to buckle their seatbelts for this ride that will arrive in stores in March 2012.
Mystery – Alex Hughes, a semi-finalist for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, is set to start a new thriller series set in a dystopian Atlanta. The books will follow a telepath who works with the city’s (extremely uncooperative) police department.
Young Adult – Jackson Pearce re-boots The Little Mermaid for the contemporary tale Fathomless. In this novel a young mermaid seeking to become human must seduce a mortal and steal their soul. This dark tale will hit shelves in Fall 2012
Mystery – Debut author Stephanie Cha's first novel will tell a tale of a young L.A. woman obsessed with Raymond Chandler and Phillip Marlowe. The heroine attempts to solve a friend’s mystery only to land in the middle of her own noir thriller in Song & Siren. Publication date TBA.
Mainstream – The unfulfilled heroine of Dana Bate’s newest novel has decided to make some big changes. This Washington, DC-based woman decides to open underground supper club and discovers that it may be the key to finding happiness. The Dupont Circle Supper Club doesn’t have a publication date yet but is sure to become a book club favorite!
Historical Romance – Anne Barton’s Regency romance The Proper Miss’s Guide to Bad Behavior won the 2011 RWA Golden Heart award. Now the reading public will get a chance to enjoy this tale that pairs Project Runway and Downtown Abbey for what is sure to be a delicious historical tale.
Series Romance – Connie Cox, an RWA Golden Heart finalist, has penned a tale that will thrill fans of House and Grey’s Anatomy. In this upcoming, currently untitled, story from the Harlequin Medical Romance line, sparks fly between a sexy hospital administrator and a gifted diagnostician.
