Forewords - The Books Before The Buzz

With our column, Forewords, we let readers know the latest book news about some of the web team's most-anticipated upcoming releases across the genres — just as the projects are announced!

AUTO-BUY AUTHOR

Young Adult – The phenomenal David Levithan has created a mind-bending plot for his upcoming novel, A. In this story, the main character is a person named “A”, who takes over a new person’s body each day and must adapt to their life. But when A takes over one teen’s body, it falls in love with the boy’s girlfriend and is now desperate to be with her. RT’s Whitney says, “this isn’t just a must-read, it’s a ‘top of my TBR pile, how can I get my hands on this book sooner?!?’-read!”

RETURNING FAVORITE SERIES

Urban Fantasy – We have fallen in love with Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson, the no nonsense heroine who spends her days as a private investigator and her nights as a grim reaper. There have been two books in this intriguing series so far, so we were thrilled to learn that fans can expect at least two more books to come. Publication dates TBA.

Erotica – Maya Banks will be adding two new tales to her popular erotic romance series that features the Colter family. Readers will be treated to a new novella — released simultaneously as an e-book and in print — in the Spring/Fall of 2012. And then the fourth full-length book in the series is slated to be published in April 2013. There’s no title for this tale yet but the heroine is introduced in Colters’ Daughter, which is available as an e-book now and will be released in traditional format this coming February.

PIQUING OUR CURIOSITY

Historical Romance – Get ready to head back in time when Lecia Cornwall's third book, Devil to Pay, is released next year. Readers can expect a Regency romance that has the heroine’s family plunging into poverty, with nowhere to turn but an infamous Duke who offers marriage. An absentee sister and true desperation has the heroine stepping up to rescue the family — but will she lose her heart in the process?

Fantasy – In A Red Sun Also Rises by Mark Hodder, readers will follow an Anglican missionary and his assistant who journey to New Guinea in the 1880s but are tricked into traveling to another world. The book’s publication date hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ve heard that readers can expect this to be a “sword-and-planet adventure” and are looking forward to finding out what that means.

Thriller – While on a fieldtrip to a plastics factory a teacher and several students are involved in an industrial accident in Adam Lewis Schroeder’s All-Day Breakfast. The result is that this group begins having seizers, start loosing touch with reality and find they desperately crave bacon. (Although we have to ask, who doesn't crave bacon?) This tale will be in stores September 2012.

Mainstream Fiction – In Anne Fortier’s The Sisterhood a modern-day Oxford grad student tracks the process of two Amazonian sisters as the warriors cut a swath through the ancient civilizations. But are these women actual historical figures or only popular myth? Either way, we are looking forward to seeing how Fortier’s fresh voice brings the classical world to life for the author’s sophomore story!

Erotica – Rachel Kramer Bussel will publish her first anthology of steamy stories specifically designed for reading in pairs with Irresistible: Erotic Romance for Couples. This collection will be published in December 2012 alongside two other anthologies that will also be released by Cleis Press, Labonte’s Best Gay Romance 2012 and Best Lesbian Romance 2012 compiled by Radclyffe.

EXCITING DEBUT AUTHOR

Historical Fiction – In Keowee Valley author Katherine Scott Crawford will transport readers to 1769 as her heroine shakes off the confines of Charleston, South Carolina society for a new life on the frontier. This determined young woman is desperate to rescue her cousin from a death sentence and create a community of her own. We wish we didn’t have to wait until 2012 to find out what happens to this undoubtedly intrepid fictional lady!

NON-FICTION PICK

Blog-turned-Book - The Coquette's Notes To My Future Husband, turns the author’s Tumblr by that same name into a traditional print collection of rules for a modern marriage. You can expect to encounter rules that are sexy, funny and sometimes grotesque — but The Coquette’s objective is to remind readers that more than anything, the modern marriage should be based on honesty and mutual respect. This seems like it’s old-fashioned values in a very modern format!

MOVIE DEAL

Contemporary Romance – The producer of the Mission Impossible franchise and Vanilla Sky, Paula Wagner, has optioned the film and stage rights to Internet Dates from Hell by Trisha Ventker. This autobiography takes readers on a journey through the ins-and-outs of the New York City dating scene as the relocated Kindergarten teacher tries to find true love through Internet dating. We are intrigued to find out how well this real-life odyssey will translate to the big screen.

NOT-SO-COZY MYSTERIES

Walter Mosley will continue his popular Easy Rawlins series with two more novels. The author will also release a noir-esque stand-alone tale featuring a porn star as she attempts to get out of the business.

In Hiding Gladys by Lee Mims, a geologist must figure out who she can trust after she unearths a dead body on the property that is being tested for a quarry deal. Danger and disaster lurk on either side of this feisty heroine if she makes the wrong decision. The as-of-yet untitled series first may hit stores as soon as Fall 2012.

A British detective who has gone rogue gets into trouble in the United States in Colin Campbell’s new series. In the upcoming books Jamaica Plain, Mentecito Heights and Snake Pass, the detective discovers that what was originally explained to him as an extradition case is actually a mystery with much deeper roots. Readers can get a taste for the first book in this series when it is published next fall.

Stress Test by author Richard Mabry, MD, will tell the tale of a fiery lawyer and her handsome client, a doctor who is trying to prove that he his not the murderer that everyone believes him to be. Stress Test promises to have plenty of sizzling heat between the couple, but will they be able to prove the doctor’s innocence before the true killer perfects the frame-up? Unfortunately we won’t know until the book is released in 2013!
