Forewords - The Books Before The Buzz

With our column, Forewords, we let readers know the latest book news about some of the web team's most-anticipated upcoming releases across the genres — just as the projects are announced!

Young Adult - Imagine Stieg Larsson added a paranormal element to his mystery series and focused on a teen audience. This is the closest comparison we can find to the newly announced The Engelsfors Trilogy from Swedish authors Sara Elfgren and Mats Strandberg. Starting in May 2013 with The Circle, this series follows six teenage classmates who discover they are all witches. With a showdown with ancient evil on the horizon, two more books, Fire and The Key, will continue the fascinating journey that this group makes as they ready for the beginning of the end.

Fantasy - In the first two books in the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series, writing duo Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris had intrepid secret agents Wellington Books and Eliza Braun shuttling all over Victorian England solving mysteries. The third and fourth outing for these characters are already in the works and while there is no word yet on what kind of adventures are coming, we have heard that the 2013 release will be called Dawn’s Early Light. Could this possibly be a reference to problems in a young America that will require some expert sleuthing from Britain’s favorite spies?

Historical Romance - Time to don your corset and petticoats because author Kate McKinley is taking readers to a house party in Regency England. The yet-to-be titled anthology will let readers discover all of the guests’ secrets, by allowing us to see the entire event through three different couples in three interconnected novellas. On your mark, get ready, and flirt!

Erotica - Wander the aisles of any big-box store and you are sure to find some wild and wacky things. (If you don’t believe us, just check this out.) However, the writer heroine from Elizabeth Maxwell’s upcoming story Suburban Erotica wins the prize for uncovering the most shocking find of all. While shopping at her local Target store, she runs into the male lead in her most recent book! Now this author needs to get her character back into her novel, but it may take a while since he is determined to make the most of his freedom. Release date: TBA.

Paranormal Romance - After cheating death over and over again, the twins in Erin Quinn’s paranormal story, Five Deaths of Roxanne Love, are taking some serious heat from both the media and the Grim Reaper himself. When her brother goes missing, the culprit is anyone’s guess, but the heroine is determined to save her sibling, even if it means teaming up with a not-to-be trusted man with secrets of his own.

Series Romance - All is fair in love, war and business. At least that is what the hero in Katherine Garbera’s upcoming Harlequin Desire book, Baby Business, thinks. When he and his two bachelor pals take over a video game company for revenge, they realize quickly that they are the ones being played.

Contemporary Romance - “Rebound” is such an unpleasant word, but this is exactly what the heroine in Tamara Morgan upcoming release The Rebound Girl signs up for. In this 2013 e-book release, an outgoing kindergarten teacher can’t keep her eyes off of a newly divorced plastic surgeon who is opening a medical spa in town. After eight months without sex, she thinks the doc can use a little TLC and she is just the person to get him back into the swing of things.

Thriller - Before reading Shane Kuhn’s book, The Intern’s Handbook, there are three things you must know. First, the story is narrated by an employee of Human Resources, Inc. a company that sends assassins, posing as interns, to do wet work. Second, all “interns” retire at the age of 25 — whether they want to or not. And third, the narrator is on his last job and is about to be retired. Interested? Keep your eyes out for Kuhn’s thrilling first novel, which will be hitting shelves soon.

Historical Fiction - A wealthy young woman goes against her family’s wishes to become an ambulance driver during the Great War, in Jennifer Robson's Out Of All Knowing. However, she gets more than she bargained for when she falls in love with a trauma surgeon who works the front line and may not be able to leave the battle behind him. Get ready for this emotionally touching tale, which will be releasing in Winter 2014.

Take one dash of Gossip Girl, one teen girl who wants a heaping helping of fun and travel south of the border and you have Mexican High. A TV show based on Liza Monroy’s YA novel is currently in development and will follow senior high school student Mila, as she is enrolled in an elite international school in Mexico City. Drugs, nightclubs and bribery are only the beginning for this tale of out of control youth who has too much time and money on her hands.
