New Year, New Series: Sue Duffy's Red Returning Series

It's a new year and with it come a plethora of new inspirational series. All week long we are taking a look at some of our favorite series starting titles and today we have Sue Duffy's suspense novel The Sound of Red Returning in our crosshairs. Here's what the author had to say about what readers can expect from her new series.

What gave you the inspiration for your Red Returning series?

A few years ago, I wrote a magazine feature about a concert pianist from Ukraine. Her story of life upon the world’s stages, played out against the backdrop of combustible politics and ideologies, fascinated me. Add to that the rising tide of tension between the U.S. and Russia plus the discovery of Russian spy rings operating in our midst, and a story began to percolate.

Will the books in this new series be similar to the writing style of your previous works, or can audiences expect something different?

Different is good. But so is consistency. I hope my readers will always return for that next book because they’ve found a writing style they like and can count on. What I strive for in story, though, is the unexpected.

What it is about the series starter, The Sound of Red Returning, that you believe will draw readers in?

It’s urgent. It’s a David-and-Goliath conflict on a global scale, and you only have to read today’s headlines to understand the stakes. But more than that, it’s the story of those caught in the crosshairs, struggling to make sense of what’s happening to them. Could it be any one of us? If it can happen to a young woman who just wants to play her music — and tend her lonely, wounded soul — who of us is next? And whom can we turn to for help?

What can readers expect as your series continues?

Something they can’t see coming. Something to ponder long after the final word. And hopefully, affection for the characters that inhabit the reader’s world for a brief and shining moment.
