We’ve been waiting for this day for months, the morning when we begin the 2012 RT Booklovers Convention. The festivities begin with our annual Welcome Party. There was coffee and treats for us to nibble on as we settled in. Then RT Founder Kathryn Falk, president Kenneth Rubin and publisher Carol Stacy greeted attendees and shared a look at what will be taking place in the week ahead of us.

We also heard a touching tribute to a few of the special people that the booklover community lost in the last year. We shared tears as Renee Burnard, Amanda McIntryre and Bobbi Smith gave beautiful tributes to Judi McCoy, a talented author, gifted mentor and longtime friend of the RT BOOK REVIEWS family who will be sorely missed.

Attendees also got a chance to do a little bit of early celebrating. The Toby Bromberg Award for Most Humorous Mystery was presented to mystery author Parnell Hall for The KenKen Killings. And bestselling author Rebecca York the Melinda Helfer Fairy Godmother Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Romance Genre was accepted by Karen Auerbach the Director of Publicity at Kensington Publishing on behalf of Steven and Walter Zacharius for the family’s contributions to publishing. Additionally, RT’s Kate Ryan presented the 2012 Bookseller of the Year award to Debbie Burke of Jan’s Paperbacks in Aloha, Oregon. 2011’s Bookseller of the year Darlene Krogol from Taylor, Michigan’s Another Look Books was on hand to pass the crown to its new owner.

A packed Welcome Party

And then we all collected our goodie bags and got ready to start our first day of convention panels, events and, of course, lots and lots of fun!

Be sure to check back for continuing convention coverage all week long, take a look at the RT Convention Home for more information about day passes if you are in the Chicago area, especially if you are interested in joining us for Saturday’s second annual Teen Day or our first-ever FAN-Tastic Day, which both take place after our Giant Book Fair.
