BY , APRIL 08, 2011 | PERMALINK

It was all about the authors at this morning's Kensington Mixer. Fans got to take pictures with some of their favorites, like Jacquelyn Frank, Victoria Alexander, Kate Douglas and Rebecca Zanetti (pictured below). Readers also got to mingle with the contestants for the annual Mr. Romance competition and were treated to pastries — including some special treats from Joanne Fluke! And then Kensington gave out tattoos of vampire bite marks to promote their new campaign, "Get Sucked Into Kensington!" and announced a few special Kensington contests that will run during the convention. They also raffled off gift baskets and gave everyone special goodie bags. And that was all before 10 A.M.!

RT Booklovers Convention 2011: How To Plot Your Writing Career

BY , APRIL 07, 2011 | PERMALINK

One of the most appropriate panels for today’s changing Publishing Industry was Wednesday’s “Plotting Your Career.” This session was presented by agents Deirdre Knight and Elaine Spencer of the Knight Agency, and Knight Agency clients Shannon K. Butcher and Kristen Painter. And today RT’s Stacey Agdern shares her take on the panel:

Today’s panel stressed the importance of having a mentor or someone you trust to help you navigate the changes of the publishing world. Because anybody who’s been paying attention to the news recently is aware that publishing is changing and rapidly. And one of things these changes directly effect is how an author should “plot their career.” But what does this mean?

Traditional methods of viewing long term goals no longer work in today’s publishing industry where advice given six months before could potentially no longer be effective. Answers to questions about whether to stay in print or go to e-book, foreign rights, whether to self publish or stay with a publisher change constantly. As a result, Deidre Knight reminded all of us that it’s important for people to decide “what represents the fulfillment of their dream or goal.”

RT Booklovers Convention 2011: Readers Get Racy At An Explicit Game Of Purple Prose Taboo Game

BY , APRIL 07, 2011 | PERMALINK

Some romances are sweet, some are spicy, and a few authors walk the fine line between the two. But in today's Purple Prose Taboo game the focus was on the graphic language that takes a steamy relationship to the next level. Authors Victoria Dahl, Tessa Dare and Courtney Milan are all known for their titillating sex scenes in their romance novels. But today they were put on the spot as they led readers in an explicit version of the popular board game Taboo. The room was filled with laughter as authors challenged readers to "guess that purple prose!"

While the fun was going on, we got a chance to chat with the authors about what inspired them to host this workshop and what exactly qualifies as 'purple prose'.

*READER WARNING* some of their answers are NSFW (not safe for work) and include graphic sexual language.

At this morning’s E-Book Marketing Panel “Wooing the Masses" e-book authors from across the genres shared their tips on effective e-marketing. The authors offering advice were Eden Bradley, Mari Carr, Kristen Painter and Jayne Rylon.

During the panel, each author discussed the different things they have done to market themselves and what they found most effective. Mari Carr, who recently co-authored the erotic e-book Northern Exposure with Jane Rylon, said that she felt that she was lucky to find another writer whose voice worked so well with hers. By having a co-author, the writers were able to split both the costs of promotion as well as the workload. Mari shared that they chose to focus their recent marketing efforts on connecting to readers using social media. For example they used Twitter to promote 140 character book quotes and hosted an excerpt party on Facebook.
