RT brings you an exclusive first look at Terri Garey's upcoming novel, Devil Without a Cause. We go beyond the back cover blurb with the author who shares why she brought back Sammy Divine (aka the Devil) from her popular Nicki Styx series.
I’ve always loved a good story. Some of the first ones I ever recall hearing came straight from the Bible: the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, Joseph and his coat of many colors, the parting of the Red Sea by Moses. As I grew older I discovered the world of Greek mythology, fabulous tales of gods and monsters like the deadly Medusa, the fearsome Minotaur, and Cerberus, the ferocious three-headed dog who supposedly guarded the gates to the Underworld. Ancient myths and legends have always captured my imagination, as did the idea of fallen angels and the ever-present, age-old battle of good vs. evil.
In Devil Without a Cause, I got the opportunity to exercise a storyteller’s prerogative by adding a bit of a twist to one of the oldest stories of all. Everyone’s heard the tale of how the Devil tempted Eve to sin by taking a bite of forbidden fruit, but what if the Devil felt that he was the one tempted, and then forever punished for it? What if the reason he wreaked so much havoc in the world is that, unable to resist the charms of a beautiful, mortal woman, he was angry at mankind for causing him to be cast out of Heaven?
The character of Sammy Divine (a.k.a the Devil) was first introduced in the second book of my Nicki Styx series, A Match Made in Hell. He appeared on the scene to wreak havoc in the heroine’s life, and wreak havoc he did, although good eventually triumphed over evil. Not content to leave Nicki alone, he appeared in two subsequent books with her as well, You're the One that I Haunt and Silent Night, Haunted Night. In each book, his character grew and developed, becoming more human and less diabolical as his feelings for Nicki Styx grew ever stronger. Nicki, though tempted through and through by the world’s original (and smokin’ hot!) bad boy, loved someone else, and forced to make a choice, chose the mortal man who held—and ultimately kept—his place in her heart. Sammy found himself in the unexpected position of loving a mortal woman enough to let her go, and went one step further by saving her from the evil forces that surrounded him.
While Nicki Styx eventually got her happily-ever-after, Sammy’s story was just beginning. Forever changed by his love for the dark-eyed girl who dwelt in the Light, he was no longer completely content with his life as the reigning Prince of Darkness. In Devil Without a Cause, he finds himself restless and alone, questioning the anger and blame that he’s spent eons nurturing. He’s so restless in fact, that when offered a possible chance at redemption by taking on the role for which he was originally created—that of a guardian angel—he takes it, albeit on his own capricious, devilish terms. Hell-bent on doing things his way, he uses the tricks of his own trade (temptation and seduction) to both bring together and tear apart two very different people who’ve made their own deals with the Devil. Faith McFarland is in need of a miracle, and Finn Payne just wants to stay alive. A cursed ring is all that stands between Finn and Hell, and all Faith needs to save her terminally ill child. Falling in love was never part of the bargain, but once they taste Heaven in each other’s arms, they must work together to convince the Devil to give up his due. Devil Without a Cause will be released in June 2011 and will be followed by A Devil Named Desire in February 2012. I hope you’ll enjoy this new take on this age-old story of the rebellious fallen angel whose lust for the flesh led him to defy his Creator, and follow Sammy as he discovers his own path to redemption. (Or does he?) :)
