When I read that there was going to be a graphic novel adaptation of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, my eyes rolled so hard I thought they were going to fall out of my head. No more, I thought. The Dragon Tattoo wave has crashed, and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Stieg Larsson is turning in his grave, wishing that he were able to enjoy the financial benefits of his internationally successful Millennium trilogy.
Do you want try out a paranormal graphic novel but don’t know where to start? All of our coverage of Comic Con 2011 got us in the mood to check out some new illustrated tales. So for some expert advice on which new supernatural stories to pick up, we called in RT reviewer Ruth. Today, she shares how she started reading graphic novels and recommends four of her recent finds.
I enjoy romance comics! When I was a much younger woman (I am in my sixties, now) my husband would walk with me to the corner drugstore where we would buy two bottles of Coca-Cola and two comics. For several years, this was our routine, walking hand in hand and enjoying the balance of our life together. Being newlyweds we didn't have much money and still this was a favorite treat. His preferred issues were Captain America and Spiderman, but I liked anything with a romantic story.

There’s a new comic book company joining the shelves alongside Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse and IDW: Kingstone Comics.
Today the president of Kingstone Comics, Art Ayris, gives RT readers the inside track on why he began this faith-based company and what it means to him.
“My wife was a television director and producer and I had some friends in the film and television business so I had been around that part of media and communication for years, but more on the fringes. Then I had some success in screenwriting with winning some writing awards, including Best TV Movie in Hollywood's Next Success contest. About the same time we saw some niches that were not being adequately served in the graphic media market and decided to throw our hat in the ring as a publisher so we could manage and promote great new content - as well as market it to film and television companies,” Ayris told me.
New York Comic Con 2011 may be over, but the deals we are hearing about are heating up. In addition to our NYCC coverage, we absolutely could not wait to pass along the news about three upcoming graphic novel projects coming from some of the biggest authors of the year.
The Millennium Trilogy is going graphic! Stieg Larsson’s runaway bestselling series — which started with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — will be adapted by DC Entertainment’s Vertigo. In traditional format, these books have sold over 60 million copies worldwide and spawned two film adaptations so we were particularly interested to hear that the series will now be adapted into graphic novels. Although Vertigo has not yet announced an artist or adaptation team that has been signed to work on the series, we expect those details to come down the line shortly.
There was tons of action taking place at New York Comic Con 2011, and we couldn't cover it all ourselves. So, we got author and RT's Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels Columnist Anne Elizabeth to share a few of her highlights from the event. The vibration of feet stampeding through the Javits Center was a welcome feeling and sound on preview day, Thursday, October 13th. When the doors opened at 4 p.m., some fans raced to their destinations as others strolled to spots and stood vigil by comic book publisher booths waiting for the latest NYCC Comic Book Exclusives, the special comic books that are only handed out at this event.
Among the favored items were George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones: Issue 1 from the Del Rey Booth, the partial of book II of the Twilight Saga graphic novel and Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl Psycho Killer partial graphic novel from Yen Press. I must admit even my own NYCC Exclusive, the teen-rated short story comic, The Hall of Insides, flew off the shelves.

New York Comic Con is unique in the fact that not only do fans get to meet amazing artists, but we can also watch them work. Every year at NYCC, Artist Alley is erected in order to corral the incredible talent visiting the city. This year artists sketched while sitting at tables, standing at easels and even kneeling next to a car. While strolling through Artist Alley, I was happy to see a few of my favorite author/artists, so I stopped in to check out their creative processes and also ask them what they are currently work on.
Today was the first day of the 2011 New York Comic Con, the biggest comic and graphic novel convention on the East Coast. RT's web team was there hanging out with fellow booklovers, meeting authors and, of course, snapping photos.

Bestselling author Anne Rice has thrilled readers with her vampire world and her fictional series about the life of Christ. Now Rice will be adapting the second book in her Christ the Lord series into a new medium with the help of graphic novel author (and RT Contributor) Anne Elizabeth. The adaptation of Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana will feature art by Siya Oum and be published by Sea Lion books.
Although this is the series second, we anticipate that readers will have no problem diving into this re-telling of an already familiar tale as it features many of the characters of the classic Biblical tales. Says Rice, "The characters you know will be there — Jesus, Mary, Joseph — in the rich colors and beautiful forms that only artists can draw."
Film producer Aron Warner's newest project, a co-written comic book series about teens who are the result of a genetic mutation experiment, has been on our radar since it was first announced in February. We brought you more news of the series in the June issue of RT BOOK REVIEWS when author and RT Senior Contributor Anne Elizabeth got a chance to talk with Warner.
In the interview, Warner revealed his inspiration for the series. He also described how he met the artist he and his co-writer, Philip Gellat, would use to illustrate the series, Brett Weldel.
Finally, this week the much-anticipated comic series will be debuting at the San Diego Comic Con with Pariah!
