The Collected Inspirations for a Surprising Romantic Suspense

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, NOVEMBER 19, 2010 | PERMALINK

With thousands of books published every year, it can be difficult for authors to come up with a unique premise for a book. So when we found out that the e-book Trash Course revolved around a mystery set in a hoarder's booby-trapped house, we were immediately intrigued. We knew that we had to find out Penny Drake's inspiration for this unusual romantic suspense.

Humans collect stuff. But for some of us, this natural instinct goes haywire, and the victims discover they can’t throw anything away because they might need it some day. It’s not laziness or stupidity. It’s a psychological illness that’s very difficult to treat.

So with the holidays — and all that family time — right around the corner, the author considers how to enjoy the festivities without the strife.

Big families and the holiday season…a recipe for love, laughter and a little bit of chaos. Every family celebrates in a different way. Some have quiet, semi-formal dinners. Some small, intimate celebrations with their spouses and children. And some have rowdy family get-togethers that threaten to topple the Christmas tree.

What Is the Best App For Inventorying E-books?

BY Dear Jane, SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 | PERMALINK

Welcome to Dear Jane, a weekly column based upon reader mailbag questions on anything relating to e-books. No question is too simple or too mundane. We are all learning together. Send your questions Jane@DearAuthor.com with "Dear Jane" in the subject matter.

Dear Jane: What is the best i-app to use for book inventory? I have an iPod Touch that travels with me and have fiddled with some of the apps but so far haven't found 'the one' to fit this need.

Currently I have all my books listed on an Excel spreadsheet - it works great when I'm at home in front of the computer, but is useless when I'm at a bookstore trying to remember what books I do/don't have, what's on my 'to get' list and what I've already read.

Oh, and it'll need to handle a LOT of books, like 2000+ for my current list with room to grow... Any suggestions? ~ S

Dear S: I tested out the ones for the iPhone/iTouch and I like myBookshelf app the very best. Unfortunately, you would have to have the Google ID for each book to be able to import your list, but by searching on the author's name, you can easily add books to your inventory i-app.

Here's a review of the apps I tested:

Changes To The E-Book Buying Landscape

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, SEPTEMBER 08, 2010 | PERMALINK

Samhain is consolidating with the online bookstore My Bookstore and More to bring readers more coupons, pre-ordering for upcoming releases and a better book buying experience. We talked to Samhain CEO Christina M. Brashear about the upcoming changes.

The popular online publisher, Samhain, primarily publishes books in e-book format. The company has been rapidly expanding since it launched 2005. Now they are evolving in a new direction by consolidating their publishing house with the online bookstore that currently distributes Samhain’s e-books, My Bookstore and More. In the past, Samhain has sold their books online via the MBaM bookstore. The online bookstore has been a destination for readers searching for e-books published by a wide range of publishing houses both large and small. But soon MBaM will sell Samhain e-books exclusively. RT caught up with Samhain’s Publisher, Christina M. Brashear, to find out about the changes and what they will mean for readers.

Questions About The New Kindle 3

BY Dear Jane, AUGUST 26, 2010 | PERMALINK

Welcome to Dear Jane, a weekly column based upon reader mailbag questions on anything relating to e-books. No question is too simple or too mundane. We are all learning together. Send your questions Jane@DearAuthor.com with "Dear Jane" in the subject matter.

Dear Jane,

was a Nook fan/user until a few days ago when I ran into some really poor Tech Support from B&N. Never had that problem before, but it’s been a month since I’ve used them and it’s degraded a lot to the point of hair pulling. (Customer service seems okay still). Never got my question resolved and had to use another source.

I have the new Kindle 3 pre-ordered. I was sold on the global coverage, and some of the new experimental features it’s sporting. Some drawbacks are that it doesn’t utilize page numbers so I can’t cite material. Another drawback is no library e-books since Amazon doesn’t support EPUB yet. I’m hoping that will change. (Assuming everything is DRM free.)

The Amazon rep said that I had to email all files to be converted by them for use on the Kindle. That’s a pain. Can I get around this using Calibre to convert it myself then sideload? The rep couldn’t tell if the files get converted to AZW or not. I’d like to know what they are converting them to.

Has anyone successfully converted a EPUB (no DRM) to AZW?

Modern Updates For A Well-Known Mystery Hero

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, AUGUST 13, 2010 | PERMALINK

Mystery author Paul Levine is best known for his long-running series about “linebacker-turned-lawyer” Jake Lassiter. This year is the twentieth anniversary of the very first Jake Lassiter novel, To Speak For The Dead. And in light of the event, Levine is making some modern changes to his hard-boiled mystery hero's series.

The first of these changes is a formatting update; the Jake Lassiter novels are being republished as e-books. This is a move that Levine is all for but, the author admits his hero would not embrace. Levine gives readers a look inside of his hero's head for the explanation: Lassiter says about himself, “I’m not trendy or hip. I don’t drink fizzy water from France or booze in fluorescent colors. I don’t carry a Blackberry, an iPhone, or a purse. You won’t find my mug on MySpace. I am not Linked In, and I don’t Digg or Stumble Upon. I don’t have a life coach, an aroma therapist, or a yoga instructor, and I don’t do Pilates. I’m not into blogging or tweeting, sexting or spinning. In short, I’m not a yuppie, a metrosexual or Generation X, Y, or Z.” But never mind that Lassiter is unlikely to ever read an e-book, today's readers can now enjoy Levine’s Lasstier stories in this contemporary format.

Discriminating Against Erotica

BY Morgan Doremus, JULY 27, 2010 | PERMALINK

Yesterday iPad had four erotica novellas listed in its top ten selling books including the number one spot Blonde and Wet, the Complete Story by Carl East. Today the iPad list is curiously free of any erotica literature. Coincidence? Probably not.

If Apple purposefully removed these works from its list, it would not be the first time that the company has attempted to ‘clean up’ its content. Back in February, Steve Jobs made the decision to rid the iPhone App Store of all “overtly sexual content.”

While some may argue that it is up to Apple to decide what types of work they promote, many are crying censorship.

While I normally align myself strongly with the "How dare they?!?" side of these types of debate, I must admit I am torn. Business-wise this move makes good sense to Apple. It is a mainstream company that could have its reputation hurt if it becomes known as a popular purveyor of porn (or what some people consider porn). Also from a financial standpoint, it is in Apple’s best interest to take novellas off their top ten list no matter what the genre considering that many of these titles will sell for under a dollar. Hiding the likes of Big Sis, Six Sexy Stories and other short works makes way for more expensive e-books to be sold.
