Exclusive Bonus Scene: The Meet-Cute In Lynette Austin's Nearest Thing To Heaven

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, SEPTEMBER 30, 2013 | PERMALINK

Romance readers love a good meet cute, that first, awkward interaction between the hero and heroine. Sometimes sparks fly, sometimes someone face plants — either way, it's always memorable. So we were pretty excited when Lynnette Austin, author of this month's Nearest Thing to Heaven, agreed to write an extra scene where we can further see the beginnings of the love story between Ty and Sophie.

Lynnette set things up for us:

Ty Rawlins and Sophie London, the hero and heroine in my new release, Nearest Thing to Heaven, actually meet for the first time in Somebody Like You. Here, just for you, is an extended, never-before-seen version of that meet cute. Enjoy!

And now for the deleted scene ...

Halloween Costume Disasters: Entangled Authors Fess Up

BY Elissa Petruzzi, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 | PERMALINK

We know it’s not quite October yet, but we at RT are such big Halloween fans that we thought we’d start the celebration a bit early. We’ve got lots of fun planned for Halloween on the RT website, and we thought we’d let the authors of the Lovers Unmasked anthology, out this week from Entangled, start things off. We cajoled them into telling us their worst costume stories, and the lovely ladies obliged. Hope you enjoy!

Katee Robert:

My worst Halloween costume was the fall after I graduated high school. I was clever! I was hilarious! I was also roughly eight months pregnant. So I thought it’d be a brilliant idea to go to this Air Force party (with my then-husband) as a sexy pregnant school girl. I had the stockings, the short skirt, the artfully unbuttoned top … and the huge belly.

And it WAS hilarious (though not totally for reasons I understood at the time).

But the worst moment was when a drunk woman stumbled up and SLAPPED my stomach. We are not talking a love pat here, people. She gets this horrified look on her face and was like, “OMG I THOUGHT IT WAS FAKE!”

Self-Pub Suggestions: September

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, SEPTEMBER 23, 2013 | PERMALINK

It's an exciting time in publishing, we keep telling you. Self-publishing gives readers so many more options, we say. But how to determine what's good? What's worth your time and your hard-earned money? Today we've got some suggestions of a few self-published titles that have been earning some serious buzz. Your RT Web Team: here to sift through the best and worst just for you, dear reader.

The Arotas Trilogy by Amy Miles (Paranormal): We're going to be totally upfront here, we were first pulled in by the cover model's dress. Wish that we could swan around the office in such a black corset. Then we heard the pitch for book one, Forbidden, which includes a wedding massacre, stolen innocence, a prophecy, sacrifice and vampires! And then we heard that this was an Amazon Top 100 Seller. Add in the fact that Forbidden is available for FREE download right now, and ... what are you still doing here?!

From Newspapers to New Adult: A Q&A with Christina Lee

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, SEPTEMBER 18, 2013 | PERMALINK

When we first heard about Christina Lee's new adult romance, All of You, we were immediately drawn in by the story's unique premise. The way she has taken the usual bad-boy, good girl trope and turned it on its head is refreshing and intriguing. Today, Christina chats about All of You, her transition from newspaper columnist to fiction writer and new adult literature — she even spills some details on the upcoming companion novel, Before You Break!

Your first official foray into writing was as a newspaper columnist. How have your experiences in journalism influenced your novel writing?

Even in newspaper writing, where fact-gathering is essential, every column had a beginning, middle and end, with hopefully a compelling enough story to keep the reader’s interest. But probably the biggest way my experience as a columnist influenced me was that it helped me realize that I truly wanted to write fiction. I wanted to create imaginary worlds with realistic characters, and so I completed my first full-length novel in 2008.

Friday Free for All: Sally Mandel Giveaway

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, SEPTEMBER 13, 2013 | PERMALINK

Well, we made it to Friday! To celebrate, we've got a great giveaway for you, from a wonderful blast from the past, Sally Mandel

New York Times bestelling author, Sally became known for her weepy, sweeping stories. RT's own Jill Smith called Mandel's Out of the Blue, "a genuinely superb and poignant story," and her Heart and Soul "flawless."  But then an accident after routine surgery left Mandel seriously impaired with brain damage — with a long recovery ahead of her.

But just like her heroines she perservered, and now, she's back with a new saga, Take Me Back.

Mandel told us about the aftermath of her accident:

I confronted, as best I could, the challenges necessary to lead a semblance of a normal life, which, for me, includes the act of writing. It was a leap of faith. For a long time, the concept was unimaginable. But one evening over dinner, my husband asked, “How about trying to write again?"
