Morgan And Elisa Dish: The Taken By VIcki Pettersson

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, JUNE 21, 2012 | PERMALINK

What do you get when you cross a rockabilly chick with a not-quite-angel and a major mystery? Vicki Petterson’s new paranormal romance novel, The Taken.

Morgan: Before we get started, I have to apologize because this Dish is going to be a lot less comment-y and whole lot quote-y — but I swear it’s not my fault! The author has amazing passages on just about every page of this book.

Elisa: So true! The language in The Taken is nothing short of stunning. Vicki Pettersson delivers a noir-inspired paranormal romance filled with mystery and intrigue that all adds up to an incredibly fun read!

Morgan: The story opens in Las Vegas, but not the showy floors of the billion dollar casinos or the high-end shops of the strip. Instead we are at a seedy, charge-by-the-hour hotel on the outskirts of the town — where prostitution is the regular.

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, JUNE 21, 2012 | PERMALINK

June marks the beginning of the wedding season, but that word doesn't mean white silk, bouquets and veils for everyone. In today's multicultural world, people celebrate marriage festivities with very different components. Always interested in learning more about cultures and religion, we've asked three authors discuss the wedding traditions of an insular group of people — the Amish. Read on to get insight from Suzanne Woods Fisher, Tricia Goyer and and Beth Wiseman on how the Amish herald a new union.

WHAT DOES A GARDEN SAY ABOUT LOVE? WITH SUZANNE WOODS FISHER

Courtships among the Old Order Amish are very hush-hush. When a couple is “published” (code for when an engagement is announced in church), it often comes as a surprise to others. But for nosey types, like you and me, all we need to do is to keep an eye on a family’s vegetable garden. If you happen to notice celery—a lot of celery! Four hundred stalks or more—chances are that love is in the air for the young lady in the household.

The Casanova Code By Donna MacMeans Was Inspired By Victorian-Era Personal Ads

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, JUNE 21, 2012 | PERMALINK

Historical romance author Donna MacMeans is known for writing sultry Victorian romances. In her latest release, The Casanova Code, heroine Edwina Hargrove finds the rakish Ashton Trewelyn through a personal ad he places in a local newspaper. We were surprised to find that personal ads were a common way for men and women to meet during the era. The author told us that she was actually inspired by some Victorian personal ads that she found on Advertising for Love, a blog that is run by Pam Epstein. Today, the author shares some actual Victorian personals with us, as well as how the courtship worked.

Microsoft's Mobile Tablet Finally Surfaces

BY RT BOOK REVIEWS, JUNE 19, 2012 | PERMALINK

At an invitation-only event in Los Angeles yesterday, Microsoft’s Chief Executive Steve Ballmer unveiled its new family of Surface tablets. Shoppers can soon expect two versions of the Surface, the “RT” targeted at the casual consumer and the “Pro” for content creators.

After years of Apple dominating the mobile-friendly tablet market, Microsoft is finally getting into the race by using their best asset - software. Running on the yet-to-be-released Windows 8 operating system, these tablets will come preloaded with Office software. However, during the press conference, Steven Sinofsky, President of Windows, made it quite clear how he expects consumers to use the product. When describing the device he said, “It’s solid. It feels great in your hand like a book. It just fits there.”

So how will the new Surface products compare to other tablets and e-reading devices? Here is a handy chart to show the differences:
