This week authors, publishers and industry insiders have gathered in New York City to take part in the annual conference hosted by Book Expo America (BEA). All week long we will be bringing you a look to the action as we attend workshops, meet up with authors at book signings and much more.
Today we are thrilled to be talking about the future of books, the focus of today's "Day of Education" at BEA. Programs and presentations centered on the frontiers of publishing including the effects of the recent innovations in technology. From enhanced e-books, such as the Penguin Classics Amplified Editions that we reported on last week, to mobile publishing, to special social networking features authors can use to reach consumers, technology is playing an increasingly large role in the way that authors (and publishing industry insiders) connect to readers.

With our column, Forewords, we let readers know the latest book news about some of the web team's most-anticipated upcoming releases across the genres — just as the projects are announced!
Mystery - Starting Winter 2012, Lisa Gardner will begin releasing her next three books from Dutton. The first novel is tentatively titled Catch Me, there has been no word yet on the story’s plot.
Young Adult - Jennifer Lynn Barnes will soon release YA title Nobody a story about two “supernaturally unnoticeable” teens. One uses the skill to kill, while the other uses it to hide.

Today we kick off round four of the Dark Days of Supernatural giveaway! You guys are familiar with the prize, a tote bag brimming with seven new and upcoming paranormal YA novels: the newest tales from Aprilynne Pike, Kim Harrison, and Ellen Schreiber's popular series and four new authors who are making their mark on the genre, Veronica Roth, Amy Plum, Josephine Angelini and Tara Hudson.
Author Meg Mitchell Moore chats about family dynamics and the ways that they change — and stay the same — when the children in a family become parents themselves. Not only has the author been through this herself (as a daughter who has grown up to have children) but her new mainstream tale, The Arrivals, follows a family that is undergoing this important change. Today the author has created a quick list of pointers for how to navigate this challenging transition!
Trends in cover art come and go quickly. While the cartoon covers of the early '00s contemporary romances are out and there has been a noticeable decline in the number of rain boots featured on mainstream novels, in urban fantasies tattooed ladies are in and buff male chests remain the kings of paranormal romances.

Today Ciji Ware gives readers an insider look at how she creates the disasters in her novels. And don't miss your chance to win your own copy of her newest novel, the historical fiction tale, A Race to Splendor!
“…Blindly Amelia inched along a floor pitching as violently as the deck of a boat in a midwinter storm. Her hands touched the threshold opening onto the ninth floor foyer at the instant the glass transom over her head exploded into a thousand pieces…She crumpled beneath the doorframe, curling into a ball…and screamed again as a twenty-five foot expanse of wood paneling and masonry pitched outward and plunged nine stories to Montgomery Street below. She knew that no structure on landfill, no matter how well built, could withstand much more shaking without collapsing. Then, just as suddenly, the convulsions subsided.”
