Cover Reveal: Terry Spear's HEART OF THE WOLF

All the way back in 2008, Terry Spear kicked off her Heart of the Wolf series. In honor of the tenth anniversary, Sourcebooks Casblanca is re-releasing the first book in January, Heart of the Wolf, with a brand spankin' new cover! As if that isn't cool enough, we learned that the original cover designer Dawn Adams (now art director for Sourcebooks) is responsible for the new cover art as well. Before we ogle the cover art, let's see what Dawn has to say about this exciting project:

Casablanca had been around for about a year when we launched the first book (of many) by author Terry Spear. I was a senior designer, working on all sorts of titles, and had only been with the company for about two years. I remember the first time the editors launched romance titles and how terrified I was, because I had no idea how to design them (the covers). So I dove in…did what I thought looked good. And let me tell you, I was so proud of myself! It was cool and sexy—black with red type, and I got to print the cover over foil. The book sold well, and I thought, “Hey … I got this.”

Well, as the years went on, I would look back at that cover and literally cringe. Even the next book in the series, which I designed as well, was leaps and bounds above this first cover. Every designer has a project or, who am I kidding, several projects, that when they see them, they would give anything to go back and redo them. I would look at the cover for Heart of the Wolf, and say, “If I only knew then what I know now, that cover would be so much better.” When the team announced that we would be doing a tenth Anniversary edition of Heart of the Wolf, and that we would in fact be redesigning the cover, I was ecstatic! We had come such a long way with Terry’s covers, really establishing a look that identified her brand. I knew when we redid this cover, I wanted it to mimic or feel slightly similar with the original, but take it to the next level. So I knew I wanted to play off the black and red, but I wanted a hero who was amazing, and a cover that really stopped you. I wanted the reader to see the cover, and even though they might have read the book the first time, I wanted them to have to have it. I love where this cover ended up—the light background with that wolf looking right at you—and it amazes me how the wolf and our hero seem to have the same expression. It is clean and eye-catching, and ties back to the original cover that started everything for this author and her career with Sourcebooks. I am honored to have been here long enough to design more than 15 of Terry Spear’s covers, to finally have this cover match the rest of her books, and to see this author grow.

Let's take a look at that original cover:
