Name: Adrienne Young
Book: Sky in the Deep
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Current Home: Northern California
Favorite Word: I have a lot of favorites, but I’ll say… “serendipitous”.
Was this the first full-length novel you ever wrote? The first book I ever wrote was a YA fantasy that I’d planned to be a trilogy and I wrote the first two books. It was called Mark of Lore, and it was about a girl who was a slave to the princess of this war-driven kingdom, but… [enter dramatic pause] SHE was the real princess! I laugh thinking about it now because the book was really cliche in a lot of ways but it was my first real opportunity to put a big story together and I learned so much. I still have really fond memories when I think about those characters and that world.
Tell us about your day job (current or former). I am the Mother of Dragons. Four dragons, to be exact.
How did you start writing? I started writing in third grade and my teacher Mrs. Zweig forced me to enter a poem into a contest that I won. She told me I was going to be a writer. I kept writing and it was always a dream floating in my mind, but I never thought it could really happen. I started secretly pursuing publication it when I was about 26 years old and it took about six years to happen.
What was it like when you got "The Call"? It was an out of body experience. I literally woke up thinking that I had dreamed it all when I woke up for a week straight. I just couldn’t believe that all those nights writing at 2am and hoping and hoping and hoping through every rejection actually led there. I couldn’t believe it happened because I’d wanted it so badly for so long. I cried for weeks.
