Before the Dawn is an exciting second entry in Cynthia Eden’s Killer Instinct series. Like many of Eden’s novels, the romance is spicy and the suspense operates with a number of plot twists to keep the reader guessing. The basis of the romance (an ex-SEAL saves a woman from his serial killer brother) is one with inherent drama and tension that serves the story well. It’s not a stand-out story from Eden, and readers who want romantic suspense with more punch and meat will likely be underwhelmed, but it’s a solid story for anyone who wants a quick read with action. Readers desiring an entertaining romantic suspense story with familiar characters and a suspensful plotline that isn’t too psychologically disturbing will find this a good choice, as well as fans of Eden’s other novels.

Dawn Alexander has seen her share of trauma. As the only surviving victim of killer Jason Frost, Dawn has spent her life learning to protect and guard herself. Her rescuer was none other than the love of her life, Tucker Frost — an ex-Navy SEAL and Jason’s brother. Dawn and Tucker lose touch after her escape from Jason’s clutches, until a new string of murders sends them both back to Jason’s killing days. Dawn and Tucker make it their mission to stop the horror once and for all, and in the process they find their romantic feelings rekindling once again. (HQN, Aug., 384 pp., $7.99)
