Image of The Duchess Deal: Girl Meets Duke

You’ll laugh and cry and everything in between while reading this daring reimagination of Beauty and the Beast that is pure romance at its best. Dare’s gift for crafting humorous repartee is matched by her talent for writing deeply emotional stories filled with steamy love scenes. The well-drawn characters — including a strong heroine, brooding hero, meddlesome butler and stray cat — along with the witty dialogue, keep the pages flying and readers highly satisfied.

When Emma Gladstone, the vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, arrives at the Duke of Ashbury’s home dressed in a wedding gown, they are both in for a surprise. Jilted by his fiancée after returning from the war severely scarred, Ash still needs a wife. Emma accepts his proposal, but not his silly rules; especially the one about no kissing. That one wedding kiss and her request for dinner and conversation nearly destroy Ash’s plans for a marriage of convenience. Emma’s sharp wit (i.e. all her “pet” names for him) matches Ash’s sense of humor, and thanks to some meddling servants’ schemes, their marriage seems to be drawing Ash into the world again. Rumors of the Monster of Mayfair, a mysterious man in a cloak and hat who comes to the aid of the downtrodden, and Ash’s ex-fiancée’s cruelty, threaten Emma’s newfound happiness, as does the reappearance of her estranged father. Yet as their love is tested, it becomes stronger. (AVON, Aug., 380 pp., $7.99)
