Originally published as a weekly e-serial, the episodes of Scalzi’s latest Old Man’s War tale come together nicely in what proves to be an immensely entertaining novel. The crew of the Clarke is delightful, but it’s Lt. Harry Wilson who will charm readers with his quick wit and rational thought. Scalzi’s talent and humor really come through in this story, which will be enjoyed by fans of the series as well as new readers. With a bit of an unresolved ending, here’s hoping there’s more to come.

Earth has cut its ties with the human Colonial Union after learning that the CU was using them as a farm for Colonial Defense Forces soldiers and offworld colonists. Little does Earth know that in a mere 30 years, the human race could be extinct. The CU is determined to get back on the planet’s good side through diplomatic relations taken on by the ragtag “B Team” of the Clarke. But after their efforts are continuously thwarted by “coincidental” disruptions (and one too many exploding ships), the crew realizes their missions are being sabotaged ... but by who?
